The aim of the annual Energy Saving Week is to raise awareness of the importance of saving energy and to provide concrete ways in which everyone can contribute to reducing energy consumption. This year's theme is smarter energy use.
In this blog article we share tips that help you save energy in your everyday life.
One of the easiest ways to save energy is to replace the old incandescent bulbs in your home with energy-efficient LED bulbs. LED lights use up to 75% less energy and last much longer than traditional bulbs. Also remember to turn off the lights in rooms where you are not staying.
As winter approaches, heating costs rise. Temperature control plays a major role in energy consumption. Keep the temperature in the apartment at around 20-21 degrees Celsius and in the bedroom slightly cooler, at around 18 degrees Celsius. The right temperature also improves the quality of sleep. Check the seals on doors and windows to prevent heat escaping.
Electronics consume a lot of electricity. There are a few easy ways to reduce consumption: - Turn off appliances completely after use - appliances at "standby" consume unnecessary electricity. - Use an extension cord with a power switch to turn off all appliances with a single press. - Keep the fridge and freezer temperatures at optimum levels: 4-5°C for the fridge and around -18°C for the freezer.
Appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers should only be used when full. Also, reduce washing temperatures - for example, a 30 degree wash is often enough to fully clean clothes. Choose energy-efficient programmes and avoid unnecessarily long programmes.
Heating water takes a lot of energy. By shortening your shower time, you can reduce your energy consumption significantly. You can also install a water-saving shower head, which limits the flow of water but still provides a comfortable shower experience.
Many electricity companies now offer real-time monitoring of energy consumption. When you know when and how much electricity you are using, you can target energy-saving measures more effectively. Pay particular attention to electricity consumption at peak times, when electricity can be more expensive.
If possible, change your electricity supplier and choose electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind or solar power. This will reduce your personal carbon footprint and promote cleaner energy production.
